The InCentric team is experienced with the Linux operating system and has implemented multiple Linux based solutions.

The use of the Linux operating system in support of mission critical applications continues to grow at a torrid pace. Gartner forecasts that Linux servers will enjoy a robust compound annual growth rate of 20.7% over the next five years. IDC goes on to state, " Linux server platforms posted a 49.8% growth in factory revenues, year-over-year, while unit shipments grew 51.4% year-over-year. "Linux servers generated $743 million in the quarter, demonstrating their traction in the worldwide server marketplace as they take on more and different types of workloads from other types of servers," said Jean S. Bozman, research vice president in IDC's worldwide server group. "Linux servers have demonstrated six consecutive quarters of year-on-year revenue growth, proving that they are not a flash-in-the-pan technology and that they are meeting real-world computing requirements in HPC and commercial deployments." Across a variety of enterprise types the use of Linux is allowing companies to reduce infrastructure costs while increasing reliability, scalability, and customer satisfaction. Moreover, the capabilities of Linux are expanding at a phenomenal rate fueled by the worldwide Open Source community and significant investment by business. The increased depth and breath of the Linux presence will continue to drive an ever expanding repertoire of Linux compliant applications that have the potential to benefit any business. Pharmaceuticals, Life Sciences, Government, and Education have been particularly aggressive in using Linux. The ability to cluster large numbers of inexpensive computers using Linux to provide immense computational power with a relatively small investment has opened new horizons in scientific research. In addition, the ever expanding capabilities of GRID computing using inexpensive Linux based servers has increased the availability of High Performance Computing for academic and government applications as well as business. These organizations recognize the value of Linux and the power of the Open Source proposition to deliver inexpensive yet powerful computing infrastructures.

Linux continues to be in the news regarding partnerships with major IT vendors. IBM, HP, Computer Associates, Oracle, and Novell are just some of the companies with high profile Linux initiatives underway. Each of these companies are investing heavily in the Linux value proposition. Indeed, Gartner believes, "server market participants can ill-afford to ignore Linux if they wish to participate in a growth area of the market." So, "whether one is a market participant or a server consumer, Linux is one segment of the server OS market that continues to offer significant opportunities for growth as well as cost savings on a global basis during the next five years."

As server side Linux continues it's meteoric rate of acceptance the Linux desktop will find a broader audience. Todays Linux desktop enjoys a broad range of open source applications and, in concert with other applications, the ability to execute Microsoft office applications. Moreover, the Linux desktop provides a secure, and robust operating environment which substantially lowers the net cost of administration of desktop computing. Last July (2002), IDC released a report on Linux desktop adoption where it anticipated an installed base of 9.5 million Linux desktop for 2003, a number it expects to grow to 27.8 million desktop users by 2006 (versus 9 million Linux servers). IDC predicts a CAGR of 44% for desktop Linux over the next 4 years and, by 2006, a marketshare of 7% of the installed base and 10% of new unit shipments. According to IDC, Linux desktop shipments outstripped Macintosh shipments in 2002. By 2006, Linux will likely have a larger installed base than the Macintosh OS. Recently, agreements for extremely large rollouts of Linux Desktops were made with China and Germany. These agreements lay the groundwork for an acceleration of the adaptation of desktop Linux.

Finally, as an IBM Advanced Business Partner InCentric Solutions is well positioned to assist any organization formulate and execute a Linux business strategy that leverages IBM's commitment to Linux and Open Source software.
