Disaster Preparation & Recovery

Introduction

Disaster recovery is the topic we don't like to talk about or spend money funding. There's no doubt about one thing: There's no substitute for a well developed and supported plan when it's needed. Below are just a few questions to contemplate regarding your core business disaster recovery plan:

  • Is our data backed up?
  • How do we go about restoring the data?
  • How do we retrieve our applications and databases?
  • Where are our offsite backup tapes stored?
  • Which machines and files have high priority?
  • Where do we go to do the recovery?
  • What hardware and software do we need?
  • How can we reach our system administrator at home?
  • Where is the plan that tells how to do all this?
  • How complete and current is it?

Disaster Preparedness Self Assessment

We encourage you to take the Disaster Preparedness Self Assessment to determine your readiness to respond to a loss of operational capability resulting from natural or man-made events. Once you've determined your score, we encourage you to contact us to setup an onsite consultation regarding how InCentric Solutions can best fulfill your organization's needs.

Basic Backup & Recovery System

Whether you're a small five-person business or employ thousands, there are critical data systems to protect. You can always reinstall the applications but the data is priceless. We have the hardware and software you need to acquire the right size storage management system. We specialize in DLT, SDLT, and LTO solutions for the SMB market that directly support your onsite and offsite storage requirements.

Enterprise Server Clustering

The data protection and recovery needs of each organization are unique. One thing they all have in common is the need to access the important business data on demand and know it is the most current available. InCentric Solutions specializes in architecting high availability solutions that are sized and priced to meet the needs of the SMB organization. Specifically, we offer custom solutions in clustering and replication involving the following product lines:

  • Lotus Domino email servers
  • Email archiving and retrieval
  • DB2 database servers
  • DB2 CommonStore
  • Websphere middleware (Commerce, Portal, HATS, WAS) servers
  • Content management

Operating System Utilities

At the core of all servers is the operating system. You've spent years perfecting and tuning your servers for optimal performance. All of the corporate data to and knowledge base is located on the shared drives. Wow do I backup the files on my operating system, performance settings, LDAP and security information? InCentric Solutions supports the following tools that specialize in file and data backup solutions based on servers.

Microsoft Windows Data Protection Manager

As the latest member of the Windows Server System family, Data Protection Manager (DPM) is a server software application that optimizes disk-based backup and recovery. Backing up data to disk provides the fastest way to recover data lost because of user error or software and hardware corruption. With DPM, recovering information is as simple as browsing a share and copying directly from to the production server. DPM lets IT administrators easily and affordably use existing Windows Server investments such as Active Directory, Microsoft Windows Server 2003, and Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2003.

Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2003

  • Integrate with existing infrastructures and supports heterogeneous file serving as well as backup and replication of stored data.
  • Are ideal for consolidating multiple file servers into a single solution that enables cost reduction and policy-based management of storage resources.
  • Include advanced availability features such as point-in-time data copies, replication, and server clustering.
  • Can make full use of commonly used network environments and standard management software, as well as the Active Directory service.
  • Range from a few hundred gigabytes (GBs) to several terabytes.
  • Can be deployed out of the box in minutes

Red Hat or SUSE Linux Cristie Bare Machine Recovery

Cristie Data Products, a leading European provider of data storage and backup solutions, integrates with IBM Tivoli Storage Manager to provide a Bare Machine Recovery (BMR) solution for Windows, Linux and Solaris users. HP-UX support will also be added to this list during Q3/2005. This comprehensive OS backup, restore and recovery tool, backs up and automatically restores the operating system structures necessary to rebuild the operating system, as well as data files. It schedules regular operating system backups so a recovery brings back the latest information including: DLLs for the Windows operating system, service packs, patches and hardware drivers. Support is also offered for dissimilar hardware recovery with the Windows product.

Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM)

IBM Tivoli Storage Manager enables you to protect your organization's data from failures and other errors by storing backup, archive, space management and bare-metal restore data, as well as compliance and disaster-recovery data in a hierarchy of offline storage. Because it is highly scalable, Tivoli Storage Manager can help protect computers running a variety of different operating systems, on hardware ranging from notebooks to mainframe computers and connected together through the Internet, wide area networks (WANs), local area networks (LANs) or storage area networks (SANs). It uses Web-based management, intelligent data move-and-store techniques and comprehensive policy-based automation that are working together to help increase data protection and potentially decrease time and administration costs.

Tivoli Storage Manager for System Backup and Recovery

IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for System Backup and Recovery (SysBack) allows you to choose from several types of backups, including full system (installation image), volume group, file system, file or directory and raw logical volume. SysBack allows for recovery of all or part of the system; and is flexible enough to allow a system installation image from one system to be installed onto another system with either identical or different hardware configurations (cloning). Backup and recovery options are performed via a simple SMIT menu driven interface or via a command line. Support for configuration of network ports to communicate through firewalls and Pass-thru support for all AIX operating system language locales is standard.

IBM Hardware

Unless you've got a perfect score on our self-assessment, you probably need to expand your server and storage environment to accommodate the newly identified requirements. InCentric Solutions sells only the highest quality products manufactured by IBM so we are your one-stop-shop for software and hardware.
