August 17, 2005
Troy Webb, Barry Scott, Mark Milam and Holly Neal of InCentric Solutions presented Coach Krzyzewski with a check for $85,000. The money is for the Emily Family Life Center, a community outreach program named after Coach Krzyzewski's late mother Emily Krzyzewski.
The funding from InCentric Solution and The Worx Group will provide software, hardware and services for the community center's computer lab and administration office. The Worx Group created the current website and will host and maintain the site. The partnership of the two companies will provide full funding for the center's computer lab and website. InCentric Solutions and The Worx Group are committed to helping The Emily K Family Life Center respond to Durham's need for a community center. The center is expected to open February 2006.
"It is our responsibility to the citizens of our community where we work, live and play to share our blessings and to give back to our neighbors and their children," states Troy Webb.
The Emily Krzyzewski Family Life Center is located less than a mile from downtown Durham, in a neighborhood known as the Burch Ave. / West End community. Originally a textile and tobacco factory community, in the past 25 years Burch Ave./ West End has become increasingly impoverished and at risk. One out of every three families live below the poverty line (less than $17,603 annual income for a family of four), one out of three adults has not finished high school, and nearly half of the households with children under 18 are headed by women (42%). With a median household income that is barely above the poverty line, and education level that reduces vocational options and earning potential, many adults work two or more jobs. This creates a situation where many unsupervised children lack meaningful after school options and may turn instead to gangs, crime, or at best, risk-laden idleness.
These cycles cannot be broken without the concerted effort of the broader community. Without appropriate alternatives for these children they are at increased risk for low academic achievement, poor nutrition and inadequate health care, higher criminal activity, and drug use. The Emily Krzyzewski Family Life Center will add crucial capacity to respond to this community need.
The Emily Krzyzewski Family Life Center mission is to build a better future for the children and families in our community by creating an environment that fosters the development of life skills that are fundamental to reaching one's highest potential.
Their long-term goal is to identify, develop and nurture the future leaders of the community in a way that prepares them to achieve excellence in their field of choice, act as role models and mentors, and encourages them to engage in and lead change in their communities.
"The Center is about family and bringing people together. I could not be more proud than to have my mother's name on this facility and her legacy attached to this family oriented center." Mike Krzyzewski
